A child’s heart was successfully operated for a hole in the heart: Cygnus Laxmi Hospital
A 10-year-old boy diagnosed with OS ASD (Ostium Secundum Atrial Septal Defect) underwent a successful treatment procedure at Cygnus Laxmi Hospital, Varanasi. OS ASD is a heart condition characterized by a hole inside the heart. This is one of the few such rare cases treated at the hospital. A team comprising cardiologists Dr. Shashi Kant Singh and Dr.Nitesh, besides cath lab technicians, made the operation successful.
As part of the treatment, the patient was put under local anesthesia, and transcatheter ASD device closure was done through the right femoral vein. The ASD device is designed to flatten against your septum and seal the hole. Immediately after surgery, the device stays in place because of the natural pressure in your heart. Over time, your heart tissue grows around the ASD device. You usually spend one night in the hospital before returning home. In this case, also, the patient was discharged the next day.
“Structural heart defects can be treated under local anesthesia and without the use of any suture or incision and general anesthesia. Septal heart defects can be done in children and neo-natal under local anesthesia without any use of suture and incision and the patient can be discharged within one day,” said Dr. Shashi Kant while commending the team of doctors who carried out the whole procedure with utmost precision.
