Amniotic fluid is the liquid in the womb that supports the developing foetus. In some cases, the levels of this liquid are low, affecting the life of the foetus. However, there are ways to increase it by certain ways.

It is important to have sufficient levels of amniotic fluid for the growth and development of the foetus as well as regulation of the temperature. It also plays an important role in preventing any squeezing of the umbilical cord, which can hamper the food and oxygen supply to the foetus.

Here are some ways to increase amniotic fluid naturally during pregnancy, along with a brief idea of what could happen if the amniotic fluid level is high or low.

The level of amniotic fluid in pregnancy varies from time to time.

During weeks 32- 34, amniotic fluid is around 800 millilitres. After the 34th week, the fluid decreases to 400 millilitres.

To measure amniotic fluid levels, doctors use the amniotic fluid index or AFI in pregnancy. These AFI in pregnancy are measured in terms of centimetres. Healthy pregnancies have an AFI of 5 to 25 cm. It is known as oligohydramnios if the AFI is less than 5 cm.

It is not a severe problem; if anyone is suffering from it, they can coordinate with their healthcare team and find a solution. Drinking water is one of the ways to improve AFI levels. In certain cases, the doctor may suggest medical treatments. The doctor would also plan regular visits to monitor the amniotic fluid level from time to time.

Ways to increase amniotic fluid in pregnancy

Here are some of the common Home remedies to increase amniotic fluid:

  • Maintain hydration levels : If a patient faces slightly lower levels of AFI in pregnancy, they can make it up by increasing their water intake. A group study of 122 women found that women who increased their water uptake by 2 litres in 2 hours had higher AFI levels. However, more detailed studies are required to get exact values and statistics about this remedy.
  • Supplements: In a 2016 study, it was found that providing supplements of L-arginine to patients suffering from oligohydramnios showed positive results.
  • The stand had a group of 100 pregnant women suffering from oligohydramnios, and they were given sachets of 3 grams of L-arginine three times a day. It showed an increase in their AFI and can be used as one of the home remedies to increase amniotic fluid . It also showed other benefits, such as reducing complications during delivery and lengthening the period of pregnancy.

  • Bedrest: The doctor would suggest you reduce your physical activities and complete bed rest if you have lower amniotic fluid levels.
  • Early delivery : If the amniotic fluid level drops during the final trimester, the doctor performs an early delivery to prevent complications. It is possible to complete the baby’s growth through high-quality prenatal care.
  • If a woman has low levels of amniotic fluid, it is known as oligohydramnios, and for those with high levels, it is known as polyhydramnios.

Oligohydramnios is the condition of low level nearly short amniotic fluid. Symptoms include:

  • Fluid leaking from the vagina
  • Not gaining sufficient weight
  • The slow growth rate of the foetus
  • Ultrasound showed a low level of amniotic fluid
  • The size of the uterus is not growing as per the foetus
  • Polyhydramnios or hydramnios is a condition in which excess amniotic fluid is present in the womb. It occurs when the body produces excess amounts of it. It is commonly seen in diabetic patients. It can also be due to the developing foetus. Here are some of the causes of hydramnios due to the foetus within it:

  • Central nervous system or chromosome issues affecting swallowing
  • Heart failure of the foetus
  • Congenital disorders
  • Digestive problems blocking the fluid
  • Infection
  • Pohydraminos are also a common issue in the case of identical twins. The treatment for it can include:

  • Regular monitoring of the AFI
  • Extracting the excess amniotic fluid through a needle
  • Early delivery, if required
  • Thus, the optimum level of amniotic fluid during pregnancy is necessary.

If pregnant women want to increase amniotic fluid naturally during pregnancy, they should start drinking more water, reduce their physical exertion, and rest to see visible results in their AFI values. They can try home remedies to increase amniotic fluid naturally during pregnancy.

In some cases, one can use medical treatments to improve the level by inserting intravenous fluid through injection or saline solution in the womb. If facing any of these less or more amniotic fluid symptoms, you should consult your doctor for better guidance and a treatment plan. Ultrasounds are a good way to check the fluid level and health of the foetus. So book an appointment now at Ujala Cygnus Hospital to know more!
