Ujala Cygnus Kulwanti Hospital, Kanpur Treats 55-Year-Old Man with Prostate Cancer Through Advanced Laparoscopic Procedure
The patient underwent a complex, yet successful surgical procedure known as Radical Prostatectomy, which involves the complete removal of the prostate gland and reconstruction of the urinary tract. Prostate cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in men worldwide. In the Indian scenario, due to a lack of regular screening protocols and appropriate patient referral, most of the patients are diagnosed at a very late stage; usually stage 4 (metastatic i.e. non operable stage).
The surgery, performed laparoscopically, is considered one of the most challenging procedures in uro-oncology due to the prostate’s deep location in the pelvis and its proximity to critical organs like the rectum. In this case, the patient initially came to Ujala Cygnus Kulwanti Hospital with complaints of difficulty in voiding or urinating. After a thorough physical examination and a series of blood tests, the medical team suspected prostate cancer, which was later confirmed through MRI and biopsy tests.
Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the patient’s cancer was localised, meaning it had not yet spread beyond the prostate. This provided an opportunity for curative surgery. The decision was made to proceed with Radical Prostatectomy, which involves surgically removing the entire prostate and carefully reconstructing the urinary tract. This complex procedure was successfully carried out by a specialised cancer team at Kulwanti Hospital, comprising Dr. Satyam Srivastava, Urologist & Uro-Oncologist, Dr. Kush Pathak, Onco Surgeon, and Dr. Pradeep Nathani, Chief Anaesthetist and Critical Care Expert.
Dr. Satyam Srivastava, who led the surgical team, explained, "The prostate cancer was removed in nearly 4 hours and it took an additional 1.5 hrs for reconstruction. The surgery involved the complete removal of the prostate using a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach. This remains one of the most challenging operations in uro-oncology due to the prostate’s deep and difficult location in the pelvis and the high risk of injuring the nearby rectum. The delicate reconstruction and suturing of the bladder to the urethra after the prostate is removed require great skill."
The surgery took approximately 5-6 hours to complete. The medical team meticulously planned every aspect of the procedure, ensuring expert anesthetic care and a thorough understanding of the anatomical and surgical complexities involved. Dr. Kush Pathak emphasised the importance of precision in such complex surgeries, stating, "The surgery took us almost 5-6 hours to complete. Meticulous planning, expert anesthetic care during the procedure, and thorough anatomical and surgical knowledge of the organ and the disease helped us achieve this feat through laparoscopy."
Dr. Pradeep Nathani, who managed the patient’s anesthesia and critical care, highlighted the challenges faced during the surgery, particularly due to the patient’s compromised immune system and procoagulant state. "These cases require extreme caution, especially considering the patient’s age, nutritional status, and overall health. We carefully selected the optimum drugs, maintained the ideal level of blood pressure, and ensured proper urine output and pain management to guarantee a smooth surgery and quick recovery," he said.
Remarkably, the patient was able to eat and walk the very next day after the surgery and was discharged without any complications after just four days. The patient’s surgery was conducted under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, ensuring that he incurred no out-of-pocket expenses, highlighting Ujala Cygnus Kulwanti Hospital’s commitment to providing advanced cancer care at an affordable cost.
Successful surgery marks a significant milestone for Uro-Oncology care in Kanpur, demonstrating that advanced and affordable cancer treatment is now available locally, eliminating the need for patients to travel to distant cities. Ujala Cygnus Kulwanti Hospital continues to set benchmarks in medical care, assuring the public that they can receive world-class treatment right at their doorstep.
