Successful heart valve surgery of a girl with rare condition

A team of doctors at Cygnus Laxmi Hospital, Varanasi has given a new lease of life to a girl suffering from Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) causing pulmonary valve stenosis, which is quite uncommon. The patient was suffering from severe pulmonary stenosis along with atrial septal defect (ASD) and complained of chest pain along with dyspnea. Doctors at the hospital recommended BPPV treatment, considring the condition of the patient. She was treated under local anesthesia and the stenotic lesion of her pulmonary artery was dilated with the help of Balloon Valvotomy.

An atrial septal defect (ASD) is a hole in the heart between the upper chambers (atria). The hole increases the amount of blood that flows through the lungs. The condition is present at birth (congenital heart defect). Small atrial septal defects might be found by chance and never cause a concern. However, in this case, the ASD was associated with severe pulmonary stenosis, which means the pulmonary valve (the valve between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery) was too small, narrow, and stiff.

The best part of the treatment was that there were no stitches or scars. Her symptoms improved fastly and she was discharged early after 1 day of treatment. So, in this way, the doctors carried out the heart valve surgery with the help of Balloon Valvotomy, without opening the heart. Her chest pain was relieved, and she was no longer feeling shortness of breath. Many heart valve diseases can be treated through the same procedure without open heart surgery and under local anesthesia.

Balloon Valvotomy is a procedure used to open narrowed or blocked heart valves. It uses a balloon attached to a catheter that's inserted into the heart.
