A young woman presenting with an acute onset of severe breathing difficulty was initially misdiagnosed with anxiety neurosis at another healthcare facility. However, a detailed evaluation at Ujala Cygnus Hospital revealed that she was suffering from Pulmonary Embolism, a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by blood clots in the lungs. With a critically low platelet count of 40,000, the usual treatment involving blood thinners posed a high risk of uncontrollable bleeding. Using the advanced Penumbra system to save her life Dr. Vinesh Jain, Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Ujala Cygnus Agra, performed the region’s first mechanical pulmonary thrombectomy, successfully removing clots while minimizing the risk of bleeding.
Pulmonary Embolism is a life-threatening condition that often goes undiagnosed due to its symptoms mimicking other disorders. Standard therapy relies heavily on thrombolytics and anticoagulants, which can be dangerous in patients with low platelet counts or bleeding disorders. The innovative mechanical thrombectomy approach not only provides a safer alternative but also sets a new standard for emergency care in the region. This case highlights the critical need for awareness and access to cutting-edge technology in managing complex medical emergencies.
On the successful completion of the complex procedure at Ujala Cygnus Agra, Dr. Vinesh Jain, Director Cardiology said, “The introduction of the advanced Penumbra system is a major leap forward in treating pulmonary embolism in our region, offering a lifesaving option to patients who cannot tolerate traditional blood thinners. This technology enables us to remove dangerous clots safely and effectively while avoiding the risks of traditional blood-thinning treatments.”
This milestone marks the first mechanical pulmonary thrombectomy performed in the region and reflects Ujala Cygnus Hospital’s commitment to providing advanced healthcare solutions to the community. The successful outcome highlights the life-saving potential of using innovative technologies in critical care and supports wider adoption of minimally invasive treatments in pulmonary medicine.
As awareness increases and technology continues to improve, this procedure has the potential to change how pulmonary embolism cases are treated, offering new hope for patients facing this serious medical condition.
