Chemotherapy is a form of treatment given to cure cancer by the use of one or more anti-cancer drugs. These drugs have got cytotoxic properties and have the ability to kill the tumour cells effectively. Earlier, standard or traditional chemo used to be the only kind of drug used to treat the majority of cancers. But with the latest research and advances in technology, various other drugs are being used as well, which gives a better response in certain patients. Chemotherapy kills the rapidly multiplying cancer cells in order to prevent them from growing any further and make more and more cells in the body.
Since chemotherapy is an invasive procedure, therefore side effects related to this are bound to happen either at the time of the therapy period or even after the completion of the therapy. This is because of the fact that the drugs are unable to identify a healthy cell from a cancerous cell; as a result of which, they end up targeting both kinds of cells.
Chemotherapy is usually administered for a specific period of time or for as long as it is working efficiently in a patient. Usually, a course of chemotherapy treatment usually lasts for about three to six months, depending on the type of drug and stage of cancer present in an individual. Doctors often administer chemotherapy in cycles, with adequate rest periods between one to four weeks, which provides ample time for a person’s body to recover.
In certain individuals, one session of chemotherapy is followed by a rest period of one week, and then another treatment session is usually followed by a three-week rest period, and so on. This type of schedule is repeated several times again, and the patient’s status is accessed accordingly after every session.
The drugs, dose, and treatment schedule depend on many factors, which are as follows:
Chemotherapy is used in different ways:
The following are the main types of chemotherapy:
