Moradabad, May 17, 2022: In a complex surgery, doctors at Ujala Cygnus Brightstar Hospital, Moradabad saved the right hand of a 14-year-old boy who had almost lost it due to a severe injury. The injury had caused loss of movement in the hand due to artery and nerve damage. Dr Anil Rajput, Head of plastic surgery department, and his efficient team of doctors, immediately examined the patient and found that he had suffered a radial artery injury. A big artery was cut along with other structures like median nerve, apart from multiple tendons which help in moving fingers. It was a medical emergency which required immediate action to restore the normal hand function.
The patient, Mohd. Zuhaib from Moradabad was brought to the emergency at midnight on 15 April with a severely injured right hand. The paleness in his hand made it difficult to understand whether it will survive or not. The boy was admitted to emergency and Dr Anil Rajput examined him at 2.45 AM. A proper diagnosis was made, and operation was planned and done after 5 hours. The patient was not allowed to eat or drink anything by mouth in this duration.
“The boy came to our hospital in a painful condition. We took the patient immediately in OT and operation was started at 9 AM the next day. All cut or damaged structures were repaired including right radial artery, right median nerve and almost 10 different flexor tendons which help in moving fingers. Immediately after the surgery, his hand became vascular, which means the paleness converted to pink color and the hand survived due to restored blood flow,” said Dr Rajput who has more than 20 years of experience in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery and have done over 12000 surgeries.
The timely action and immediate medical intervention helped in saving the boy’s hand while restoring full function and viability. The chances of saving a hand are less in such cases and reconstructing damaged vessels may be successful only if the patient is brought within 1 hour of injury.
