The patient was diagnosed with a rare condition of the liver called non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (NCPH)
Her condition improved within 24 hours, and she was discharged the next day
In yet another achievement, a team of doctors at Ujala Cygnus Brightstar Hospital, Moradabad, gave a new lease of life to a patient who was brought to the hospital with massive upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding due to a rare liver disease. Dr Wahid Akbar, Consultant, gastroenterology, Ujala Cygnus Brightstar Hospital, and his highly efficient team examined the patient and found that she had a liver problem which had led to enlarged spleen of 20 cm (normal spleen is 10 cm in size).
Since the patient was anemic, the bleeding posed a tough challenge in the front of doctors, but they were successfully able to treat the patient and she was discharged the next day. The 27-year-old patient, Ms. Kaur, was brought to the hospital on April 3 at 3:34 AM from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, which is 28 kms away from Moradabad. She was being treated in multiple hospitals for the last 3 years, but the diagnosis was not clear.
She was resuscitated in MICU and administered Terlipressin, a drug used in treatment of bleeding esophageal varices. An endoscopy was conducted which showed blood in the stomach.
“The lady came to our hospital with massive bleeding and then we came to know she was anemic too. As part of treatment, we used endoscopy with intravariceal glue therapy to treat Fundal Varix. We applied the endoscopic glue through Endocryl injection to block the bleeding vessels and it worked quite well. The patient’s condition improved within 24 hours, and she was discharged the next day. We are glad she received timely and satisfactory healthcare and management from our medical team,” said Management of Ujala Cygnus Brightstar Hospital, Moradabad.
“Earlier, these advanced endoscopic therapies were available in metropolitan cities like Delhi, but now these are available in our hospital also, so patients from or near Moradabad need not to travel so far when they can get quality treatment for such rare diseases here,” he added.
The patient was diagnosed with a rare condition of the liver called non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (NCPH). It refers to a heterogeneous group of liver disorders that primarily affect the liver vascular system. These disorders are classified anatomically based on site of resistance to blood flow.
