Ujala Cygnus Maharaja Aggarsain Hospital, Panipat, successfully treated a 47-year-old patient suffering from severe abdominal pain caused by a complex bile duct stone using advanced cholangioscopy and Electrohydraulic Lithotripsy (EHL) technology.

Vinod Kumar, a resident of Panipat, had been experiencing recurrent abdominal pain for nearly one year. Despite previously undergoing gallbladder removal surgery (Cholecystectomy), his symptoms continued and gradually worsened over time.

After detailed evaluation, Dr. Sunil Jee Bhat diagnosed him with Choledocholithiasis, a condition in which stones are present in the bile duct. The patient was advised to undergo an ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography), a commonly performed endoscopic procedure used to remove bile duct stones.

However, during the procedure, Dr. Bhat found that the stone was unusually large and firmly impacted in the common hepatic duct, making it difficult to remove through conventional ERCP techniques.

To manage this challenging condition, the expert gastroenterology team performed an advanced Cholangioscopy using the Boston Scientific Spy Glass system. Through direct visualisation of the bile duct, doctors were able to precisely locate the impacted stone.

The team then used Electrohydraulic Lithotripsy (EHL), an advanced technique that breaks large stones into smaller fragments using controlled shockwave energy. Once fragmented, all stone pieces were successfully removed, resulting in complete clearance of the biliary tree.

Following the procedure, the patient experienced complete relief from abdominal pain and related symptoms and recovered successfully.

Doctors at Ujala Cygnus Maharaja Aggarsain Hospital stated that this was the first case in Panipat and within the Cygnus Hospital network where Cholangioscopy with Spy Glass technology and EHL was successfully performed for a complex bile duct stone.
