Ujala Cygnus Saves 62-Year-Old Patient from Life-Threatening VT Storm with Emergency CABG Surgery

Moradabad, 23rd September 2025: Ujala Cygnus Hospital, North India’s largest NABH-accredited healthcare provider, successfully saved the life of a 62-year-old hypertensive and diabetic patient who arrived in critical condition with severe chest pain and repeated fainting due to a life-threatening ventricular tachycardia (VT) storm. Despite intensive anti-arrhythmic treatment and over 30 cardioversion-electric shocks to stabilize his heartbeat, the patient’s condition worsened. Coronary angiography revealed severe triple-vessel disease, making emergency coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery the only viable option to save his life.

Managing a VT storm, which involves repeated, dangerously fast heartbeats, is one of the most challenging emergencies in cardiac care as it can quickly become fatal. In this patient’s case, the VT storm was made worse by severe blockages in three major coronary arteries. While medications and electric shocks can sometimes control the rhythm temporarily, the ongoing lack of blood flow to the heart kept triggering the dangerous arrhythmias. The only way to truly stop the storm was to restore blood flow through emergency bypass surgery. The patient’s critical state required quick decisions and close teamwork among doctors, nurses, and specialists—showing the hospital’s strength in handling complex heart emergencies.

Dr. K. G. Yadav, MBBS, MS, MCh CTVS surgeon who led the surgical team at Ujala Cygnus Hospital, said, “We were dealing with one of the most relentless cardiac emergencies a clinician can face. This surgery was a race against time, as every time we stabilized him, the VT storm would strike again. It was like defusing a ticking bomb over and over. The decision to take him up for emergency CABG while he was still unstable was a calculated risk, but it was our only real chance at saving his life. What made the difference was the absolute coordination between emergency, cardiology, anesthesia, surgery, and critical care, all working like a single unit. This case wasn’t just about our clinical skills, but it was about never giving up.”

After the surgery, the patient continued to face life-threatening arrhythmias in the ICU and needed nearly 40 more electric shocks to stabilize his heart. Under the close care of Dr. Javed and Dr. Shashank, the team carefully adjusted medications, corrected electrolytes, and supported his heart function. As the new bypass grafts began to restore proper blood flow, the dangerous heart rhythm slowly settled. For the first time in days, the monitors showed a steady heartbeat — a crucial turning point. Remarkably, after enduring nearly 70 shocks, the patient walked out of the hospital on his own, a true testament to expert care and the strength of the human spirit.

This extraordinary case highlights the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork, advanced cardiac care, and the hospital’s commitment to saving lives during the most challenging emergencies.
