The Challenge: Severe Leg Pain Affecting Daily Life
A 54-year-old male presented with severe pain in both legs while walking, significantly affecting his mobility and ability to perform routine activities.
The patient had a complex history of peripheral arterial disease. He had previously undergone stenting of the left common iliac artery, which later became occluded. Subsequently, he underwent femoral-to-femoral artery bypass grafting to maintain blood circulation to both legs.
Despite these earlier interventions, the patient developed severe pain in both legs while walking, indicating a possible compromise in blood supply to the lower limbs.
Diagnosis: Identifying the Cause
CT angiography revealed high-grade stenosis, or severe narrowing, of the left common iliac artery. This artery played a critical role in maintaining blood supply to both lower limbs in the patient’s existing vascular anatomy.
The findings helped identify the cause of the patient’s symptoms and guided the treatment approach.
Treatment: Angioplasty and Stenting
The Interventional Radiology (IR) Department at Ujala Cygnus Kashmir Superspeciality Hospital, Srinagar, treated the patient with angioplasty and stenting of the left common iliac artery under the care of Dr Showkat Banday.
Angioplasty involves widening a narrowed artery using a balloon catheter. A stent is then placed to help keep the artery open and improve blood flow.
The procedure aimed to restore adequate circulation to both legs and relieve the severe pain experienced during walking.
Outcome: Back to Walking Without Pain
At follow-up, the patient reported that his leg pain had completely resolved. He was able to walk, move around and carry out his routine daily activities without pain.
The improvement marked a significant positive change in his mobility and day-to-day quality of life.
Conclusion
Peripheral arterial disease can severely affect mobility when narrowed or blocked arteries restrict blood flow to the legs. This case highlights the importance of timely diagnosis and appropriate vascular intervention in managing complex arterial disease.
The successful outcome at Ujala Cygnus Kashmir Superspeciality, Srinagar, demonstrates how angioplasty and stenting can help relieve symptoms and restore functional mobility in appropriately selected patients.
